Mount Bear & Sages Ravine, Connecticut
Tuesday, October 24, 2000

Another Hobo & Lightfoot adventure.

Couldn't have asked for a better day, from beginning to end. The temperature rose to the low 60s in the Berkshires, a slight breeze, and the sky was a beautiful turquoise; not a cloud anywhere.

I met LightFoot at his place at around 7:45 am, and after scarin his ole-lady to death, we were on the road by 8:00 am. A brief stop for gas, and a quick bite at Collins' Restaurant in Cannan, we were at the trail-head at about 10:45. We decided to follow the Under Mountain trail from Rte. 41 in Salisbury to its junction with the A.T., turn North and follow the A.T. up and over the summit,
then down into Sages Ravine, turn around and catch the Paradise Lane trail to the Under Mountain, then back to the vehicle. 7 or 8 miles.

My first trip to the Bear was back in early June. Followed the A.T. from Rte 41 to the summit, then back down. A total of 13 miles. Always prefer loop hikes over "up-n-back" hikes.

The views from the summit of Bear are as fine as any around that area. Clear skies and hardly any haze. The Twin Lakes were sparkling, very pretty. The Monument on the peak of Bear is interesting.

Sages Ravine, tucked in between Mt. Bear and Mt. Race, is one of my favorite places to hike. In the early Summer, when the brook is really flowin, the Ravine is quite a treat. Be sure to include it in your next hike to "The Bear".

Walked off the trail at 3:00, and was home by 5:15.

Bear was my first Mountain, my first real hike. Reckon I'll be hikin' her for many years to come.

Happy Trails  :)

-Hobo
